Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourvière

The first sight of Lyon which I would like to talk about - Basilica of the North Dame de Fourvière, located at the very top of Lyon on the hill of the same name near the metal tower Fourvière, a small copy of the Eiffel Tower. In truth, the basilica is the main symbol of Lyon. The basilica impresses with its beauty and grace, not only externally, but also internally. It was built at the end of the 19th century by the architect Pierre Bosson.

The basilica consists of two churches: the lower and the upper. The basilica is famous for its mosaics and stained glass windows. It was here in 1630 that Anna of Austria prayed to the Virgin Mary for the birth of an heir, and in 1630, thanks to the prayers of the townspeople to the Virgin Mary, the city was saved from the plague. In 1843, a statue of the Virgin Mary was installed at the top of the chapel.

Currently, the basilica is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Next to the basilica there is an observation deck from where a magnificent view of the entire city of Lyon opens. You can get to the basilica on foot along the narrow streets of Lyon or use the funicular (5 euros).

Galo-roman amphitheater

In addition to Lyon's first landmark, on the hill Fourvière in addition to the Basilica of Notre-dame-de-Fourvière, there is Halo-Roman amphitheaterbuilt during the reign Octiviana Augusta... The amphitheater was a huge arena located in the center and from which the steps diverged. Basically, musical comedies were staged in the amphitheater, and nowadays the annual summer festival of music, cinema, tetra - "Fourvière nights" is held on its stage.

Place de Bellecour

The most famous square in Lyon and one of the largest squares in Europe. We can rightfully say that it is the area Bellecour based landmark of Lyon. In the center of the square rises a huge monument to Louis 14, erected already in 1825. In the center of the park there is a small lake where you can take a short boat ride. Sailing on the lake, your gaze will certainly fall on the rose garden, which contains numerous varieties of roses from all over the world. Believe me, you will not find so many roses anywhere! But the main attraction of the park is Zoo lyonin which tigers, giraffes, monkeys and other animals live. You can get to the park both by bus number 41.8 and by metro (stop Massena). The entrance to the park is free.

What to see in Lyon from the amazing squares? One of the most picturesque and beautiful squares in Lyon, Terro square located in the city center in front of By the City Hall of Lyon and Museum of Fine Arts... Piazza Terro was originally a piazza, but after it was taken over by the city, it became a bad name. It served as a place of execution for many people. Now, the square is never executed, and the square has become a favorite place not only for the townspeople, but also for numerous guests of the city; absolutely all tourists visit this landmark of Lyon.

The main temple of the city of Lyon is Lyon Cathedralalso called Cathedral of Saint-Jean... The cathedral was built in the Gothic style and will not leave indifferent any tourist. The graceful, majestic cathedral looks great against the backdrop of the brick houses of Lyon, and its stained glass windows and mosaics, which depict the life of monks, will forever be remembered by you. The most ancient clock of the 14th century is kept in the cathedral. Despite the venerable age of the clock, she delights the parishioners four times a day with her ringing, to which the dolls dance.
