Did you know that Chamonix is not only the most famous resort in France, but also the oldest, it is more than 200 years old. After all, it was here in 1924 that the first Winter Olympics took place and it was at this resort that we learned that the 2014 Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi!
The resort is located in the White Valley (LfValee Blanche) at an altitude of 1007-1202 m at the foot of the highest peak in Western Europe - Mont Blanc. The height of Mont Blanc is 4,807 m.
We got to the Chamonix resort by plane from Irkutsk to Geneva, since the resort is located near the border of Italy and Switzerland. The distance from Geneva Airport to Chamonix is 88 km. We advise you to take a mini bus that runs from the airport to the resort. The fare is 50 euros.
Living is even easier. For your taste, you will be offered a hotel room, cottages, chalets. Book in advance. We stayed in a very cozy family hotel. la Maison deMonvotierlocated in the small village of Servoz (LeServoz).
It is worth saying that this is the very first village in the Chamonix Valley and is located at an altitude of 812 m. We got to the resort by train. The fare is 7 euros, and the travel time is 20 minutes. But what 20 minutes it is! During the trip to the Chamonix mountains, you will have a view and an amazing panorama of the glacier de Bosson, which slowly slides down to the next village.
It should be said that the de Bosson glacier is the largest glacier in Europe. You can admire it not only from the train window, but also climb from the eponymous village of Bosson, located not far from the Chamonix resort. Or you can use the ski lift that will take you to a height of 1,400 m. Walking along the glacier is very exciting.
There are informative stands along the road that tell tourists about the glacier itself and the history of its creation. Climbing to the very top of the glacier, a cozy cafe awaits you, where you will be kindly offered to taste the local cuisine of the region.
And so, we arrived at the Chamonix resort. It should be said that the resort is intended for absolutely any wallet and tourist: from golden youth to ordinary lovers of skiing from heights. Chamonix has one of the longest and longest slopes in the Alps - this is the legendary White Valley known to all skiers and not only, the slope is more than 20 km, there is where to show your professional skills.
In the Chamonix mountains, there are great opportunities for those who are confident in alpine skiing and often like to tickle their nerves and get adrenaline from off-piste and off-piste skiing. For beginners, there are a lot of green and blue tracks (there are in each of the ski regions). There are 49 ski lifts, 6 funiculars, a snow park, trails of any complexity. In general, everything to have a great ride and have a good time!
We advise you to buy a ski pass Mont Blanc Unlimited ... This ski pass standard for skiing allows skiing in three countries, not only on the slopes (or off the slopes) of the Chamonix Valley, but also in the Italian ski resort Courmayeur and a Swiss resort Verbier... It will cost you 48 euros per person (1 day). You can also buy a Chamonix ski pass for 39 euros per person. But you can also purchase a half-day pass.
It is worth telling about the food in the Chamonix mountains. The resort has various kinds of cafes, restaurants, the food here is very tasty and freshly prepared. We advise you to take food with you, since the prices in local restaurants and cafes are very expensive, food is not worth that much money.
The next stages of acquaintance with the Haute-Savoy were a visit to the mountain peak Aguille du Midi or as it is also called "midday peak". It got its name because at 12 noon the sun is directly above this peak. The height of the peak is 3842 m.
You can get to Aguille du Midi only by cable car (we warn you right away, you will have to stand in a queue for about 10 minutes or more, as there are a lot of people who wish).
The return fare will be € 50. Travel time 20 min. At the top there is an observation deck, a cafe with good food and a souvenir shop for tourists at tourist prices. The observation deck offers a wonderful view of the white valley, and Mont Blanc is just a stone's throw away. Fascinating!
A tip from the travel-picture team remember that the temperature at the top is different from the temperature in the valley. In winter, the temperature at the summit is -14 degrees, in summer the air warms up to +2 degrees. Don't forget to bring warm clothes and a thermos of hot tea. After all, how pleasant it is to sit on the terrace to drink hot tea and admire the beauty of the French Alps. By the way, the clouds are just a stone's throw away.
