Rhodes is interesting and varied. If you are visiting with a group of friends and want to have fun, then head to the northern part of the island, where lively resorts await. Have you arrived with your family and want to take a break from work and the bustle of the city? Then you go to the south of the island - there is a more relaxed and secluded atmosphere. But in any case, Rhodes has a great climate and almost cloudless weather - it is warm here from about April to October, and the beach season starts in May.

Observation Decks

A popular attraction in Rhodes is the observation decks. They can be viewed on their own and are usually easy to reach.

Mount Tsambika

The mountain leads to the monastery of the same name, where the icon of the Virgin Mary is kept. According to legend, she works wonders and helps childless spouses who want children to fulfill their wishes. To climb up, you need to overcome 307 steps, and from there you will see the bay and the sea.

The monastery is located 6 km from the town of Archangelos. You can reach it by bus from Rhodes from the bus station at the address: Averof, 2. You need to get off at the Tsambika Church stop or in the city itself. If you live in Archangelos, you can get there on foot. It is also convenient to get there by a rented car.

Mount Filerimos

Filerimos is located near the town of Ialyssos, 15 km from Rhodes. To reach the mountain, you need to walk along the cypress alley, and then climb to the highest point. The mountain is crowned with a 17-meter cross. The name of the alley is "The Way to Golgotha", since the distance is equal to that which Jesus walked when he carried the cross.

In Filerimos, you can buy a liqueur with local herbs, the recipe for which has not been disclosed.

Monolithos castle

Previously, the castle protected the island from attacks by enemies and pirates. Today, standing 100 meters above the ground, from here you can see magnificent views of the Aegean Sea and the islands nearby and, of course, take beautiful photographs.

You can get to the castle by a rented car or by bus. To do this, you need to drive from the city of Rhodes to the town of Monolithos, and then walk another 3 km to the castle. The return flight is only the next day, but there is a place to stay overnight.

Rhodes old town

Do you like ancient sights? Then you will definitely love the Old Town of Rhodes. You can watch it on your own or with a guided tour. The Old Town is an open-air museum, where every street is associated with a story. Visit the Street of the Knights, Hippocrates Square, Socrates Street, the Square of the Jewish Martyrs and the Church of the Virgin of Burg.

Mandraki Harbor and Rhodes Fortress

See the most famous of the three harbors of Rhodes, Mandraki. It is believed that it was here that the legendary Colossus of Rhodes stood, one of the seven wonders of the world. You can walk around the harbor in a circle, while on the way you will see the Church of the Annunciation, the building of the New Market (Nea Agora) and the Mandraki windmills. At the end you will come to the 4 km long medieval Rhodes fortress. This is the longest fortress in Europe, once it was impregnable.

Palace of the Grand Masters

The 14th century Palace of the Grand Masters (Castello), built by the Hospitallers, is also worth visiting. According to legend, it was erected on the site of the Byzantine fortifications, and they - on the site of a pagan temple. The palace can be found on the Street of the Knights in the Old Town of Rhodes. The ticket price is 8 euros, children under 18 years old - free.

Lindos

The ancient town of Lindos with its white houses is considered typical Greek. It is located on the east coast of the island, 55 km from its capital. Here you will see the acropolis with the ruins of an ancient temple, the walls of a knight's castle and the ruins of a church. From above there is a beautiful view of Lindos.

You can also look at the ruins, ancient reservoir and temples in the settlement of Kamiros. You can get to the village by bus from the bus station in Rhodes.

In Rhodes, you can see independently the temples and religious buildings:

  • the Church of St. Nicholas (Agios Nikolaos Funtukli) near the village of Eleous;
  • the church of St. Panteleimon in the village of Xian, 65 km from the city of Rhodes;
  • Mount Filerimos and the Monastery of the Virgin;
  • Moni Tari monastery, 40 km from the capital of the island;
  • the temple of Athena in Lindos;
  • the Suleiman Mosque in the center of the Old Town of Rhodes - the first in the city and the largest on the island;
  • the Kahal Shalom synagogue in the Jewish quarter of Rhodes is the oldest in Greece.

If you want to purposefully devote a day to the study of Orthodox shrines, you can book an excursion and see several temples at once.

We advise you to go to the neighboring island of Symi - you can go there by ferry from the port of Rhodes or take an excursion and go for the whole day. There are taverns, clubs, shops, and you can also see the ruins of the Castro fortress if you climb to the top by overcoming 500 steps. Other attractions include the Church of St. George, the Archaeological and Folklore Museums.

Entertainment

Valley of the Butterflies and Ostrich Farm

If you are vacationing in Rhodes with children, see the Valley of the Butterflies in Petaloudes, about 30 km from the capital of the island. From May to September, you will meet thousands of bear butterflies in this nature reserve. Here you can sometimes find crabs, lizards and rare birds. Also in Petaloudes are the 17th century monastery of the Virgin Mary Cleopatra and the bench of Tiberius, here the ancient Greek emperor was in voluntary exile.

Not far from the valley there is an ostrich farm and a mini-zoo, where your children will get acquainted with camels, ponies, goats, monkeys, kangaroos and other animals.

You can go to the Valley of the Butterflies by bus from the central bus station of the city of Rhodes to the station "Butterfly", the journey will take about half an hour.

Aquapark

Great fun for kids in Rhodes - Faliraki water park. For children over 12 years old, the ticket costs 24 euros, and for children from 3 to 12 years old, the entrance is 16 euros. You can get to Faliraki by bus from Mandraki harbor from Rhodes, by car or taxi.

You can get to Rodini by car on the road to Lindos or public transport. To do this, you need to take bus # 3 or # 12 at Mandraki in Rhodes, and then walk from the stop about 300 meters to the park itself.

Winery

Those wishing to taste the local wine are advised to go to Embona - the village of winemakers and the famous wine-growing center of Rhodes. Here you will be shown a modern distillery and a traditional winery, and they will tell you about the technologies for making wine, and you can taste it. It is impossible to get to the village itself by public transport, so you will need to get from Rhodes from the bus station to the city of Kamiros by bus. From Kamiros you will take a taxi to the village. The most convenient way is to take a rented car or take an excursion, which offers a visit to Embona.

Show and nightlife

Fans of discos and bars will appreciate Orphanida, the "street of bars" in the New Town of Rhodes. Here you will find a cafe or club according to your musical taste. The street is parallel to Akti-Miauli, bounded by 28 October and Nikiforos Mandilar streets.
